Checklist for Evaluating a Collaborative Attorney

Before hiring a collaborative attorney you should create a checklist for each one that you interview.  Here are some questions that you could ask:interview

1. Qualifications of attorney.

A. What professional degrees or licenses do you hold?

B. How many years have you practiced as a divorce attorney?

C. How many years have you practiced as a collaborative attorney?

D. What percentage of your cases are devoted to mediation or collaborative law or litigation?

E. How many cases have you handled in mediation or collaborative law in the past year?

F. What other areas of law do you practice in?

G. Where did you do your training in collaborative law or mediation?

H. How many hours have you spent on continuing education in either mediation or collaborative law in the past year?

 

2. Have you received special training or advanced training in the following areas:

A.Child development issues.

B. Real estate appraisal, valuation, sales and developmen.

C. Financial and tax issue.

D. Domestic violence issues.

E. Substance abuse or substance abuse recovery issues

 

Don’t be afraid to ask these questions.  The answers will definitely help you in assessing whether this attorney is right for your particular case.
